Comentation On Let Us Now Praise Famous Men :: essays research papers

It was in 1936 that James Agee and Walker Evans, on assignment for Fortune magazine, drove into rural Alabama and entered the world of three families of white tenant farmers. And it was in this same year that Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to his second term as president, his New Deal having won the resounding support of American voters. Fortune was not unique in its concern for the tenant farmer; Roosevelt himself appointed a Committee on Farm Tenancy to investigate the situation of this segment of the nation's farming population. The committee's startling report, issued in February of 1937, revealed that tenant farmers constituted half of the farmers in the South, almost a third of farmers in the North, and a fourth of Western farmers. These figures, accompanied by reports of great suffering and stark poverty, led to the enactment of the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenancy Act, which reorganized the Resettlement Administration as the Farm Security Administration, and which included amo ng its purposes assisting enterprising tenants in becoming landowners.[1] Agee and Evans examined the life of the tenant farmer as closely as the president's committee, but from the perspective of artists, not New Deal politicians or economists. Proposing no economic solutions to the problem of tenant farming, they attempted only to describe the life of the Gudgers, the Woods, and the Ricketts as accurately as possible "in its own terms."[2] Nevertheless, the result of Agee and Evans' endeavors, a book entitled Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, is, as much as the New Deal itself, a great experiment in addressing the issues of social responsibility and human dignity that faced the United States during the 1930s. Roosevelt was elected to the presidency in 1932 because he recognized the need for an innovative approach to the U.S. economy. Financial institutions, including the banking system and the stock market, had been thoroughly undermined along with American confidence, and had miserably failed to recover on their own, as Hoover had promised. The methods that had been used to bring the economy out of a slump in the 1920s were simply not working anymore, and the casualties of depression were rapidly mounting in a frightening new world. As Roosevelt recognized that traditional plans for economic recovery could not end the Depression, so Agee and Evans knew that traditional methods of photography and journalism would not work to convey accurately the hard and simple lives of the tenant farmers.

A Local Foreign Manager is Best for Managing Foreign Subsidiaries Essay

A Local Foreign Manager is Best for Managing Foreign Subsidiaries For many global organizations, or organizations that produce or sell goods or services in more than one country, a difficult question is how to develop and place managers in foreign operations. Some people believe organizations should let foreign managers run foreign subsidiaries because of the large differences among national cultures while others believe that domestic managers should be trained to run foreign subsidiaries because of loyalty issues. Nation culture is the particular set of economic, political, and social values that exist in a particular nation. This culture effects all aspects of global organizations operations. Foreign exchange rates, banking and accounting laws, and tax codes can all affect the profitability of foreign subsidiaries. These rules and regulations vary from country to county. The way Japan accounts for good will varies dramatically from the way the United Sates regulatory agency demands it be recorded. In some countries politics play a larger role than others. In sm...

Warren Harding Error

Malcolm Gladwell in this book proposes that people have the ability to unconsciously think without consciously thinking. That we could arrive at decisions, resolutions, and judgments without thinking too much and it is likely to be as good as when we consciously think deeply. Gladwell defines thin-slicing as that ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behavior based on very narrow slices of experience. He tells us that we have a crucial brain activity that keeps us able to function by silently processing daily stimulus called our adaptive unconscious. An individual is unaware of such brain process thus making it to a great extent uncontrollable. He gave a good example called the â€Å"Warren Harding Error† which is thin-slicing in a superficial level and giving too much emphasis on the snap judgment. The author used a combination of scientific studies (Implicit Association Test), historical accounts (Warren Harding), social happenings (discrimination), no table trends (Coke v Pepsi), and simple day to day observations regarding the creation of snap-judgments called thin-slicing.The book opens our eyes to the fact that in coming up with judgments and decisions, we are not always value-neutral. That in coming up with these judgment and decisions regarding just about anything there is the factor of time and careful investigation. The author used evidences that strengthen the theory that we indeed rely on our own adaptive unconscious and that we are capable at arriving on a decision that is accurate. An example would be the how the fake kouros was identified from a mere hunch. He points out also there is an also likely chance that our way of thinking would be impaired by day to day bombardment of stimulus. An example would be the Warren Harding Error which lets us stop from thinking beyond what we already figured. It keeps us away from weighing the need to look beyond what we thin-slice. It is important for us not to rely too much on our snap judgment and we should know when to apply such judgments. Crucial moments and decision making in such moments still require thinking twice and doubting and thin-slicing must then give way to rational thinking and decision making. Along this line, the author also wishes for us to remember that stereotyping is also a tool for thin-slicing.It is then important for us to consciously be able to look beyond our stereotyped ideas. While it may be unconsciously done, our knowledge of our disposition would bring it out in the conscious level. Finally, it should also be noted that at times there is a need for the isolation of our criteria for judgment. The unconscious is able to seep through the creation of the judgment although it is not in line with the true nature of our decision (you may hate President Bush not because of his policies on war but because of his southern drawl). In this situations there is a need to focus on what really should be considered. The book is applicable in al most all facets of life. Even in law, the theories pushed by the author finds application . Although not apparent, its application to the legal system tells us that Law is governed by human features (i. e. flaws and strengths). Think about how often we thin –slice, judges or juries are also able to thin-slice without them knowing it.It is value neutral yet it never takes away the fact that it could work for or against anyone thus reasonability and equality really does not exist. What is crucial at this point is that we accept that people indeed thin-slice and that we really are able to come up with a sound judgment regardless of the length of time that we think and whoever we are. We may never realize this but we thin-slice every day, we thin slice people at the first moment we meet them, we thin slice every day, we stereotype, and we need to realize this.

The entrenchment of abortion in different countries

Legalizing or not legalizing abortion is one of the most controversial subjects in the world. Arguments for and against abortion have taken religious, political and moral perspectives with the proponents and opponents giving substantive claims to support their arguments. The entrenchment of abortion in different countries’ constitution has raised resistance from the conservatives who claims that the laws are contradicting when they impose death penalty on individual convicted of murder while legalizing abortion is itself legalizes murder of unborn. Despite the ensuing arguments over the subject, it is clear that abortion is practices in every corner of the world regardless of whether it is legal or illegal. My thesis is that abortion should be legalized since illegalizing does not deter people from aborting and it deteriorates and risks life of women. Abortion can be defined as a premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether in naturally like in case of a miscarriage or artifici ally induced through the use of surgical or chemical equipment. However the controversy around the subject surrounds about 93% of the abortion cases which are carried out for elective, based on no medical reason.Abortion should be legalized in cases case where a woman has undergone a painful ordeal like rape or incest which may affect the whole of their live and bearing such a child will rekindle painful memories of the ordeal. With rising population of homeless people and street children and families, abortion should be legalized so that those who feel that they cannot raise their children are not compelled to give birth to children who they cannot support and will leave them to wander on the street. Even in countries where abortion has not been legalized, there are rising cases of backstreet abortion where many women lose their life. These and other facts support the reasons why abortion should be legalized. I once again restate that abortion should be legalized since illegalizing do es not deter people from aborting and it deteriorates and risks life of women. Why abortion should be legalizedMy first argument is that abortion should be legalized in case where a woman conceive after undergoing a painful ordeal like rape, incest, and other sex related ordeals. Such an ordeal is likely to haunt a woman for the rest of her life.Research has revealed that one out of every six case of rape or incest usually results to pregnancy. Apart from the danger of the mother contracting venereal disease which may affect fetal formation, women who give birth to children conceived in such circumstances are likely to suffer repeated emotionally every time they see that child since they remember the ordeal.Research reveals that more than 50% of pregnancies resulting from such cases are usually aborted all over the world where abortion is legalized or illegalized (Johnson, 2008). Most women turn to backstreet abortion while many are not likely to report pregnancy resulting from rapes and incest fearing stigma. Therefore, they end up undergoing crude methods of abortion where not one risking their health.   In order to save women from such ordeals, I feel that abortion should be legalized. My second argument supporting abortion is that there are many women who conceive when they have no means of bringing up the child.   Many women will enter into a relationship and when they conceive, their partners depart them. Some have no jobs or any economic means and they end up bearing children who are left to wander in the streets.   With the declining welfare supports, abortion should be legalized in order to save women from undergoing such ordeals which are likely to affect their life and that of their children.Research shows that more than 21% of the cases if abortions are related to women who are not ready for responsibilities while 11% are related to young pregnancies mostly to teenagers who cannot take responsibility for the children they bear (Johnson, 2008).Wo men should have the choice to decide carrying to full term pregnancies which they are prepared to handle and bring up the child in a good environment. I feel that abortion should be legalized in order to give women a chance to make choices of giving birth to children who they can take care.My third argument supporting abortion is that even in countries where abortion has been illegalized, people have not been deterred from performing abortion. In contrast to countries which are legalized where women seek abortion in hospitals, there are more people who are seeking abortion in backstreet clinics through crude methods risking their health. A study by Henshaw et al.(1999) showed there were more than 26 legal and 20 illegal abortions worldwide in 1999, concluding that stringent measures against legal abortion did not guaranteed low rate of abortion.Another study by Sedgh et al. (2007) concluded that the rate of abortion in countries where it is legalized has been decreasing with time. L egalized abortion help women to access safe abortion which is not detrimental to their health while illegalizing abortion expose women to health hazards. Therefore abortion should be legalized to help women access safe abortion.ConclusionAbortion remains a controversial subject in the world. My thesis is that abortion should be legalized since illegalizing abortion does not deter people from aborting and it exposes women to health risks. Abortion should be legalized for women who undergo painful ordeals like rape and incest which are likely to haunt them throughout their life.

Junk food advertising

Subject 1: Because of the alarming rate of childhood obesity and the power of advertising to attract children, a growing number of people think that junk food advertising should be banned or limited in some way. Would you be for or against such a ban? Write a persuasive paragraph in which you develop and support your position on this issue. I strongly believe that junk food advertising should not be banned because it will not resolve the childhood obesity issue and this measure will go against the customers’ right to be informed about new products and discounts prices.First, junk food advertising should not be banned to reduce the childhood obesity. People who support this new measure think that it is the perfect solution. However the reality is different. Although a ban will probably decrease of childhood obesity at first. In the long term it will certainly not last. It is the parents’ responsibility to educate their children concerning the methods companies use to att ract them to their products. It’s the parents’ duty to teach them that even if they are shown something that they desire, they can't always get what they want.Junk food commercials are not the problem. However, over permissive parents who allow their kids to have and eat anything they want are the culprits. For instance, I remember when I was younger I used to watch my favorite cartoons every weekend. In Between two cartoons most of the time there were some junk foods commercials shown, which had an effect on me because after seeing these advertisement I really wanted to go to MacDonald’s. I also remember that my parents told me that it was not healthy. They taught me good eating habits and they also allowed me to eat junk food only once or twice a month. This example show that junk food advertisement have very little impact on children. On the other hand the parents play a major role in the fight against obesity. Second, consumers have the right to be informed a bout new products and discount prices. Banning junk food commercials will contradict this right. That is inconceivable. In 1962, President John F Kennedy presented a speech to the United States Congress that mentioned the right to be informed. This right states that businesses should always provide consumers enough appropriate information to make intelligent and informed product choices. For example one night I did not know what to eat and I saw on TV that Domino’s pizza was offering good deals. So, I decided to buy pizzas for dinner. Without this commercial I would not have been informed about this special price. In addition banning junk food advertisement would interfere too much with the right of companies to sell legal products, and would require a cumbersome bureaucracy to determine what junk food was and which programs were intended for children. Third, banning junk advertising will have deleterious effects on the economy.According to The Federal Trade Commission food co rporations spend at least $1. billion in the US every year to advertise their products. If the government bans specific commercial advertising enterprises. Advertisement companies as well as the makers of the products advertised will see a decrease in their revenue. Disney channel estimated that the ban will cost them 7 millions of dollars. In conclusion banning junk food advertising is not a solution because it will not resolve the child obesity problem. Also, consumers will no longer be aware of new products and services. Finally it will have negative effects on the economy.

Fluoride Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Fluoride - Essay Example Since calcium bonds correspondingly robustly with the fluoride ion, the fluoride ions are much less available than in the synthetically created fluoride. The synthetic composites are more noxious since they are more soluble in water and the fluoride dislocates from the composite (Davidson, 2003). The maximum quantity of fluoride is suggested to around 1 ppm (parts per million). For instance, at 1ppm an individual would drink 1 mg of fluoride in 1 liter of water. However, the differences take local situations, which affect the quantity of water one drinks, into account. Nevertheless, fluoride can be taken in several means or sources. Processed foods and beverages manufactures in fluoridated areas contain high amounts. Vegetation consumes concentrating more in their exterior parts with leafy vegetations containing the most. Pesticides sprayed on plants also contain fluoride. Tea has 160-660 ppm optimizing at 1 mg per 6 cups. A lot of activities which take raw materials from the earthâ €™s core and focus them to high temperatures release fluorides,. Fluorine composites are associated with the creation of aluminum, uranium, bricks, cement, and steel, amid others. The aluminum industry produces the highly toxic by-product fluo-spar from aluminum slag. In the nuclear industry, hydrogen fluoride and elemental fluorine are utilized in uranium production. For a lot of these industries fluorides present the largest disposal challenge. Steel and aluminum industries emitting fluoride air pollution have been castigated for devastating plants and laming cattle, oxidization of steel bridges and cause of death smogs. In Dona, Pennsylvania, 1948 a fluoride rich fog from the city’s zinc mill murdered 20 people (Masters & Coplan, 1999). Phosphate fertilizer plants have also caused fluoride damage to animal and vegetation life in their locality. The appliance of phosphate fertilizers t soil severely rises fluorides in the soil which amount to consumption by plants we la ter eat and infectivity of drinking water through run off. Research studies project that the people of Aichi in Japan were taking up as much as 11 mg of fluoride a day from meals they were consuming. What these illustrations suggest is that we are already exposed to high amounts of fluoride. By fluoridating our water, we still raise the baggage, dislocating fluoride further through the environment where it gathers and established its way back into our meal products. Fluoride toothpaste alone were toting up 116 00o pounds of fluoride to the environment in the 70s. The occurrence of fluoride in high fronts and its connected challenges of drinking water existing in many parts of the world has been well documented. Fluoride present in drinking water is acknowledged for both its merits and harmful impacts on health. Many decisive solutions to these problems have thus far been given. Fluoride from water can be removed in numerous means. It can be removed either by an adsorption process of by a coagulation, precipitation process. The mode appropriate for an offered circumstance required to bee shrewdly chosen with regard to numerous factors (Urbansky & Schock, 2000). According to Urbansky & Schock (2000), water is one of the primary elements fundamental for maintenance of all types of life and is accessible in adequacy in nature occupying just about three fourths of the surface of the
